The Medieval spirit in Browning as compared to Morris, Rossetti, and Swineburne, 1939
McCrary, Leon Carl
1930-1939
In this thesis it has been my purpose to compare the medieval spirit of Browning with that of certain of his contemporaries---Morris, Rossetti, and Swinburne---and to determine in what spirit and character these poets turned to medieval themes as a medium of expression. To achieve this purpose, certain poems which deal with medieval themes, and which are representative poems of the respective poets, have been treated in sufficient detail to reveal this medieval spirit. The contrasts and comparisons are therefore obvious, in view of which it is hoped the reader has been informed of, if not new, at least, fresh and stimulating ideas and values found in the investigation of these Victorian poets.
