Study of polymethylsilyethylenediamine and polydimethylethylenediamine as potential ceramic precursors., 1988

Although the route to Si3N4 ceramics has traditionally utilized polysilazanes as preceramic polymers. we have recently synthesized polysilylamines by the polycodensation of ethylenediamine with dimethyldichlorsilane or methyldichlorosilane to investigate their use as ceramic precursors. characterization (FTIR, TGA, elemental analysis and GCms) of pyrolysis (in N2) products of the polysilylamines has demonstrated that one of these polymers has great potential as a cermic precursor to ceramics, including possibly Si3N4. The reasons for this are explored. Multinuclear (1H, 13c and 29Si in one dimension and 2-D 29Si-1H and 13C-1H) NMR techniques have provided significant evidence for the proposed structures of the synthesized polymer. Furthermore, the results suggest that an understanding of the chemistry underlying the formation of ceramics will aid in developing even more effective ceramic precursors and in developing an optimal pyrolysis procedure.
