Abstract: We investigate various mechanisms for the occurrence of numerical instabilities in the discrete modeling of ordinary differential equations by finite-differences. The Logistic equation is used to illustrate the three types of numerical instabilities. Our results can be easily generalized to arbitrary first-order differential equations.
