A study of attitudes and knowledge of Fulton county police officers concerning mental retardation, 1981

The major purpose of this study was to determine the police officers knowledge of mental retardation and their attitudes toward the mentally retarded offender.The subjects used in this study consisted of thirty-six randomly selected police officers in a south county precinct of Fulton County,Georgia.The descriptive survey method was employed in this, study. The research instrument, a questionnaire by Jeffrey Schilit, was utilized with minor modifications. The self-administered questionnaire consisted of five sections with fifty-seven items. The data were presented using percentages for each item on the questionnaire to determine the knowledge and awareness of policeofficers in the areas of mental retardation and the mentally retarded offender.
