The residual aerylordtrile content of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene resin was studied by continuous, discontinuous, and exhaustive extractions, along with solid sampler analysis. All analyses were made by gas chramatography (GC); and all resin samples were made using the same resin. A comparison was made of the four techniques to de termine which was the best technique. The continuous extraction and discontinuous extraction gave high results of 49 ppm and 33 ppm, respectively. The exhaustive ex traction and solid sampler analysis gave low results of 1.5 ppm and 0.68 ppm, respectively. The continuous extraction was determined to be the best technique. Continuous extraction is most convenient. Continuous extraction does not require plots and mathematical equations, as does discontinuous extraction. Continuous extraction does not re quire long periods of time, as required for exhaustive extraction, and it does not require a specially constructed injection system as does the solid sampler analysis.
