Abstract
This study attempts to provide a tentative structural approach to understanding the nature and function of sex role stereotypes in American culture. Two pervasive rationales for their existence and utility are discussed as well as the efficacy of their perpetuation within a rapidly changing technological society. Implications for clinical practice and treatment as well as overall societal considerations for enhancement of women's mental health are also discussed.
