Today, after a life of nearly thirty years, FORTRAN remains to be a very useful language. FORTRAN is especially strong for specifying data input/output formats. The fact that Ada provides few such facilities motivated this thesis. This thesis reports on work done to provide Ada with a FORTRAN I/O facility. The product of this work is an Ada package which may be compiled as an I/O tool into the user's library. The user may then specify, as described in this thesis, I/O by employing FORTRAN statements.
