In this video recording, dated 1984, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III joins Halim Rahsan, the chair of the Desegregation Monitoring Committee of Portland, Oregon, and Herb Cawthorne, a member of the Portland Board of Education, on the talk show program, Conversations With. The program, hosted by Cawthorne, aired on the Black Community Television Channel in Portland, Oregon. On the program, the three men discuss the status of desegregation efforts in the Portland public school system, with particular reference to the implementation of the “baseline essays” developed by Hilliard and other national consultants. The essays provided information on the contributions of people of African descent to history, literature, social sciences, sciences, and mathematics in an effort to improve the diversity of curriculum and to improve student achievement. The participants also explore the high rate of African American children in special education and argue that it creates a new form of segregation.
