"Looking at an Educational Approach Beyond An Eurocentric Worldview as We Move Towards the New Millenium." (Lehman College, Bronx, New York) Professor Chinweizu
Asa G. Hilliard, III Papers
This video recording, dated April 27, 1989, consists of a presentation by Nigerian academic, journalist, and poet Chinweizu at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York. Professor Chinweizu argues for a shift away from the Eurocentric worldview, allowing non-European people to develop educational systems that view the world from their own perspectives. He focuses on several examples of the influence of “Eurocentrism” that need to be examined: the Humanities, the Classics, World History, World Literature, the Olympics, and the Nobel Prize system. Chinweizu asserts that all of these disciplines and activities assume a worldview shaped by Europeans. Following the presentation are two short interviews with Chinweizu, both from the same date as the presentation. The first interview is conducted by an unidentified man in a bookstore, and the second interview, conducted by Imhotep Gary Byrd, is a radio interview on New York station WLIB.
