For the People Tribute, Listervelt Middleton

This video recording consists of a special edition of the television show For The People, produced by the South Carolina Educational Television Network. This special edition, which aired in late April or early May of 1996, pays tribute to the show’s long-time host, Listervelt Middleton, who died of bone marrow cancer on April 14, 1996. Many of Middleton’s friends and colleagues speak about their relationships with Middleton. Included in the speakers are Dr. Rickey Hill, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III, Dr. James Small, and Dr. Yosef ben-Jochannan. Excerpts from For The People show in between the spoken tributes, including episodes with Hilliard, ben-Jochannan, Cheikh Anta Diop, and Dr. Na’im Akbar. The program closes with a short monologue by Middleton stating that the show was dedicated to overcoming what he calls “the myth of white superiority.” He urges people of African descent to step outside the boundaries that others have imposed on them.
