Free Your Mind 13
Asa G. Hilliard, III Papers
Beginning on September 4, 1986, the television show For The People, produced by the South Carolina Educational Television Network, aired a special series of thirteen episodes. The special series, consisting of an interview and slide show presentation by Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III was titled “Free Your Mind: Return to the Source.” This video recording includes episode thirteen of the series, dated December 9, 1986. In this episode, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III and the show’s host Listervelt Middleton, conclude the series by discussing Africans in West Africa. Dr. Hilliard argues that Africans in the western part of the continent never lost contact with Africa’s eastern part, including Egypt. He also points out that Africans often took Europeans as slaves during the Medieval period. Middleton and Hilliard also discuss the origins of “Europeans” as a category, questioning the existence of a connection between later inhabitants of the European continent (such as England) and the civilizations of Greece and Rome.
