Abstract

Beginning on September 4, 1986, the television show For The People, produced by the South Carolina Educational Television Network, aired a special series of thirteen episodes. The special series, consisting of an interview and slide show presentation by Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III was titled “Free Your Mind: Return to the Source.” This video recording includes episodes one through four of the series. In episode one, which aired September 4th, Dr. Hilliard and the show’s host, Listervelt Middleton, discuss the ways in which African Americans have been and still are oppressed in American society. Hilliard focuses on the “systematic defamation” of people of African descent in advertising, scholarship, and media. He continues this topic in episode two, which aired on September 11, 1986. In episode three, dated September 18th, Dr. Hilliard turns to discussing the African origins of humanity. Episode four, dated September 25th, focuses on the African role in the beginning of human civilizations, particularly in Ancient Egypt.
