Beginning on September 4, 1986, the television show For The People, produced by the South Carolina Educational Television Network, aired a special series of thirteen episodes. The special series, consisting of an interview and slide show presentation by Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III was titled “Free Your Mind: Return to the Source.” This video recording includes episodes five through eight of the series. In episode five, which aired October 2, 1986, Dr. Hilliard and the show’s host, Listervelt Middleton, continue their discussion of the origins of civilization in Africa, focusing on the African-ness of Egypt and discussing the influence of Egyptian religion on later religions. In episode six, dated October 8th, Hilliard presents evidence of the African origins of Egypt and the African facial features and black skin of native Egyptian dynasties. He highlights the work of African scholar Cheikh Anta Diop on the royal mummies of Egypt. Episode seven, dated October 16th, explores the question of what this scholarship means for modern African Americans. The eighth episode, dated October 23rd, continues to examine the African nature of Egyptian civilization.
