Abstract

Beginning on September 4, 1986, the television show For The People, produced by the South Carolina Educational Television Network, aired a special series of thirteen episodes. The special series, consisting of an interview and slide show presentation by Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III was titled “Free Your Mind: Return to the Source.” This video recording includes episodes nine through twelve of the series. In episode nine, which aired October 29, 1986, Dr. Hilliard and the show’s host, Listervelt Middleton, continue their discussion of the origins of civilization in Africa. Hilliard suggests areas in which Egyptian culture was crucial for the development of European culture. In episode ten, Hilliard argues that religions, such as Judaism and, especially, Christianity owe a large debt to Egyptian religion. He highlights the work of African scholar Cheikh Anta Diop on the royal mummies of Egypt. Episode eleven, dated November 21, 1986, explores the “western diaspora” of Africa with a focus on Africans in Europe and the Americas. The twelfth episode, dated November 26th, continues the theme of episode eleven.
