Nelson Mandela at the Interview on Nightline
Asa G. Hilliard, III Papers
This 1990 video recording consists of excerpts from a special edition of Nightline, hosted by Ted Koppel, devoted to interviewing and providing a “town hall meeting” with South African leader Nelson Mandela. Mandela addresses, among other topics, why he expressed support for such controversial figures as Cuban president Fidel Castro and Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The video also includes footage of Mandela’s visit to Atlanta, Georgia, on the same trip. Included in this footage are: a wreath laying ceremony at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s grave, short speeches by Atlanta mayor, Maynard Jackson, and Georgia governor, Joe Frank Harris, and an interview with Reverend Joseph E. Lowery.
