This video recording contains excerpts from “The 10 o’clock News” on KPTV in Portland, Oregon. The excerpts are four out of five segments of a series, which aired circa 1986, titled, “Reading, Writing, and Racism,” focusing on the role of racism in the Portland Public Schools. The first segment looks at the impact of race on student achievement. The second segment examines the shortage of minority teachers in the Portland public school district. On the third night, the program discussed the effects of race and racism on placement of students in special education classes. The fourth segment of the tape discusses issues surrounding disciplining of students from minority groups.
